Prostatitis is a common urological condition in men characterized by inflammation of the prostate gland, often causing pain and urinary symptoms. It is commonly caused by bacterial infections, including intestinal bacteria such as *Escherichia coli* and *Enterococcus*, or sexually transmitted bacteria such as *Chlamydia* and *Mycoplasma*.

Bacterial prostatitis can typically be identified through urine tests or bacterial culture tests. Infections caused by sexually transmitted bacteria can be accurately diagnosed through PCR testing of urine or prostatic fluid. However, nonbacterial prostatitis occurs without a clear bacterial infection and may be related to various factors such as fatigue, stress, excessive alcohol consumption, or pelvic floor muscle pain. In many cases, the exact cause can be difficult to determine.

For bacterial prostatitis, eliminating the causative bacteria with antibiotics is the main goal of treatment. Patients generally need to take antibiotics for at least four weeks, and consistent management is necessary until symptoms improve. In contrast, antibiotics are often less effective for nonbacterial prostatitis. In such cases, individualized treatment approaches may be used to relieve symptoms, including prostate massage, magnetic therapy, biofeedback, behavioral therapy, physical therapy, and thermal therapy.

Lifestyle management can also play an important role in relieving symptoms of nonbacterial prostatitis. Stress control, regular exercise, and maintaining healthy daily habits may help reduce discomfort and improve overall prostate health.

Dr. Lee Chang-gi of Goldman Urology Clinic’s Incheon branch explained that improving everyday lifestyle habits is important for both preventing prostatitis and alleviating symptoms. He emphasized that reducing excessive alcohol and caffeine intake and avoiding prolonged sitting can be particularly helpful. He added that although prostatitis can occur in many men, it can be effectively managed with proper examination and personalized treatment, and anyone experiencing persistent stinging pain during urination should visit a urology clinic for accurate diagnosis and appropriate care.
