Rezūm Therapy is a minimally invasive treatment method that improves Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) using water vapor. The procedure begins with a thorough examination of the prostate area using a cystoscope. During this time, a urologist evaluates the size, location, and pattern of the enlarged prostate tissue. Based on this, they plan the precise treatment area by measuring the prostate size starting from the bladder neck.

Using a specialized device with a needle, high-temperature, high-pressure water vapor is then injected into the prostate. A natural capsule separates the normal tissue from the enlarged tissue, allowing the treatment to precisely target only the enlarged prostate tissue while protecting normal structures. Over a period of 1 to 3 months, the treated tissue is naturally absorbed by the body, shrinking the prostate and improving urinary symptoms.

The Rezūm procedure itself typically takes about 1-2 minutes, while the entire process is completed within approximately 10 minutes. It is suitable for patients aged 50 or older with a prostate size between 30g and 80g. A key feature is its simplicity compared to traditional prostate surgery, minimizing recovery time.

Comparison with HoLEP Surgery

Rezūm can be compared with Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP). A major advantage of Rezūm is that it minimizes the risk of retrograde ejaculation, a common concern with HoLEP. Furthermore, since Rezūm is often performed under local anesthesia, it is an excellent option for elderly patients with underlying conditions that make general anesthesia difficult.

Recovery is also faster with Rezūm. It uses a simple catheter with a valve to control urination, minimizing patient discomfort and allowing for a quicker return to daily activities. In contrast, HoLEP involves more invasive tissue removal, resulting in a generally longer recovery period and potential discomfort from blood clots or irritation.
